The best thing about a BIG goal is that you can break it up into smaller, more manageable goals.


A wish is nothing but a vague statement of intent. It has no motivating power to get you up off your butt and force you to take action.


However, a goal with a deadline gives you focus. It allows you to zero in on what you want with pinpoint precision.


No weight loss or fitness goal was ever achieved without focus. Hoping to lose weight doesn't make your clothes fit any better, but setting weekly goals that keep you accountable for your actions does.


You can hope and wish all you'd like, but only getting up and making things happen will get the results you're after.

Many, probably most, gyms have a machine circuit that contains exercises for different body parts. Typically, some of the machines you'll find are the Leg Extension, Leg Curl, Hip Abduction and Adduction, Pec Flye, Lateral Raise and Bicep Curl.


The object is to move through the circuit and when you're finished you will have worked all the major muscles of the body. The problem with this approach is that the majority of circuit machines work your muscles in isolation, which is rarely how our body works in real life.


Unless you're physically disabled, a bodybuilder or rehabbing an injury you will get far more benefit from performing compound exercises, which work multiple muscles at one time. Regardless of whether your goal is strength or fat loss, compound exercises are the way to go.


Too many people who are trying to drop fat spend way too much time doing exercises that are not the best use of their time. Bodybuilders may need to add some isolation work into their routine because their goal is too make their muscles are large as possible. Rehabbing an injury usually involves a lot of isolation work.


Are you injured? Are you interested in competitive bodybuilding? If not, and your goal is weight loss, Bicep Curls, Hip Abduction/Adduction, Tricep Kickbacks, Leg Extensions/Curls, Crunches, etc. will not give you the bang for your buck that Squats, Presses, Pullups, Kettlebell Swings, Pushups, Rows, Deadlifts, etc. will.


I think Mr. Scott is right. Many gyms don't want to bother teaching members how to correctly perform free weights exercises; they use the excuse that machines are "safer." I also agree that most people will look for the easiest option when exercising. Of course, they'll also be the people who complain about not getting good results.

Exercise seems to be the overwhelming response when people ask for advice on how to lose weight. However, the "just get some exercise" mantra doesn't really pan out in the real world. Why is exercise not the reall "secret" to weight loss?

20 Minute Home Weight Loss Workout

Here is an awesome all-over body 20 minute workout that gets good weight loss results using no equipment or basic items found around the home.


Do four 20 second sets of each of these exercises with 10 seconds rest in between. Exercises are done continuously during the 20 second set. In between exercises have 1 minute rest.


1. Push Press: Holding a can from the cupboard in each hand, a push press is where you bend down into a squat then push up with your hands stretching up towards the roof.


2. Knee High Running on the spot: Make sure your knees come up to waist height.


3. Push Ups: If you cant do them on your toes do them on your knees.


4. Lunge Jumps: One leg in front of the other at a comfortable distance apart, drop the back knee down towards the floor without touching it, then come up again pushing the weight through your front heel. Quickly change feet position when "jumping".


5. Crunches (Sit Ups): Can do these many different ways, make sure you switch your core muscles "on" when doing them for best results.


6. Squat Jumps: Feet just out from shoulder width, come down into a squat (bend your legs, not your back) with one hand touching the floor, then this same hand comes up to above your head in the jump. The other hand is on your hip. Alternate hands each set.


Remember to always warm up and cool down/stretch afterwards.


For best weight loss results, do the above program at least 3 times per week.

Finding a free weight loss workout is a rarity these days. The workouts that claim to be "free" just use the term as a marketing gimmick to draw your attention in an attempt to sell you something. Well, this one is the real deal and it's designed by yours truly - a certified personal trainer with over a decade of experience.


First off - before I write out the program - I should first mention that it's a "circuit workout" which means that you'll be performing a circuit of exercises, back-to-back without a rest interval between sets. This type of format has been proven - time and time again - to be the most effect method to burn fat. So, with that being said, here it is, your free weight loss workout. Before you begin, I should mention that it's always recommended that you consult with a physician before starting a new exercise program.


Free Weight Loss Workout


Bench Step Ups (hold dumbbells to increase the difficulty)


Push Ups


Seated Rows


Standing Dumbbell Press


Standing Dumbbell Curls


Lying Triceps Extensions (use either a curl bar or dumbbells)


Repeat that circuit a total of 3 times and remember, you're not supposed to be resting in between sets. I'd also recommend that you start the workout off with 15 minutes of cardio and once the resistance training circuit is completed 3 times, you then finish off with another 15 minutes of cardio. You can use the piece of equipment of your choice. Treadmills and elliptical trainers would be the best options.
